Preschool Special Education Class Information:
Ms. Levine's PreK class is a half-day preschool special education class. The part day preschool class provides small group instruction for for 2 hours and 45 minutes four days a week and serves children ages 3 to their transition into kindergarten year, Fridays are designated for Family School Partnership. Research that shows parent involvement is directly related to student achievement. We offer individual home visits, conferences, and regional parent workshops on topics of interest for parents.
There are 2 classes, a morning and an afternoon class. Generally (although there are occasional exceptions) the morning class has 3-year-olds and young 4-year-olds, and the afternoon class has rising kindergarteners. The morning class meets from 9am-11:45am, and the afternoon class from 1pm-3:45pm. There are up to 12 children in each class. Children must meet eligibility requirements to be in the program (see below). Each child has individual goals for instruction. We use the Creative Curriculum which is a center based approach to preschool learning, as well as Foundations. We incorporate the SEFEL model for social emotional development for our students and use Conscious Discipline strategies.
Thank you for visiting our site. We welcome you and your child and look forward to a year of learning.
Does your child qualify for Preschool Special Education?
Preschool special education children are identified as having a Developmental Delay after a full psychological evaluation has been done with the child through Preschool Special Education Services, and delays in development are found as a result of the evaluation. Then, once the developmental delays are pinpointed, the evaluation team determines if the student qualifies for placement in a preschool special education class. Ms. Levine's class is one of many levels of Preschool Special Education Services provided by the Wake County Public School System. In order for a child to be placed in Ms. Levine’s class, your child MUST go through this evaluation process, and the Preschool Special Education Services Department makes the placement. (Ms. Levine does not have any input on who is placed in her class).

If you are concerned about your child’s development and your child is under 3 years old, contact the Child Developmental Services Agency (CDSA) at 919-662-4600.
If your child is 3 years or older and you are concerned about your child's development, contact the Child Find Department in the Wake County School System Preschool Special Education Services Department at 919-431-7700 or email [email protected]. For Spanish, call 919-431-7618. This is the first step in determining if your child qualifies for any type of special education preschool services, one of which is my class. However, just because you live in Douglas' base district does not automatically mean that your child will be assigned to my class if he/she qualifies. The results of the evaluation determine the type of services your child will receive. My class is only one type of service that Preschool Services provides, and the decision is based on the outcome of the evaluation.
If your child does not have special needs and is a rising kindergartener, or will be next year, your child may qualify for an NC PreK class. For more information about this go to Wake County Smart Start. (this website does not work in Google Chrome) In order to see if you qualify for one of these programs, you must complete an application (available in English and Spanish). You may call them at 919-851-9550.
If you do not have concerns about your child's development, but are looking for childcare or a preschool, a good resource is the Childcare Services Association.
