Lisa Rhoden
Although Mrs. Rhoden was born in Ohio (hence the reason she is such a big Buckeye’s fan), she grew up in Michigan. Mrs. Rhoden began volunteering at a home for abused and neglected children when she was fifteen years old. She continued to work there until she left for college. It was during this time that she decided she wanted to work with students with special needs. She attended Eastern Michigan University, where she earned her teaching certification in the areas of regular education and special education with a focus on emotionally disabled (ED) students.
Mrs. Rhoden began her teaching career by covering a teacher who was on a leave of absence at Millbrook Elementary in the Autistic II classroom. After that year, she took a position at Douglas Elementary teaching in an ED II classroom. The classroom changed to a CC II (cross categorical, self contained, level 2 classroom) after three years. The classroom slowly morphed into a resource setting and has been a fully functioning CCR class (cross categorical resource) for two years. Mrs. Rhoden continued her work with autistic children by teaching AU classes during the ESY (extended school year) Program for the next 15 years. She now works with CCR kids during the summer. Mrs. Rhoden earned her National Board Certification in 2010.
Mrs. Rhoden feels strongly that all children need to be held to high standards, regardless of their disabilities. She believes that students should focus on their abilities and strengths and not use their disabilities as an excuse for not doing their best. Her ultimate goal is to see children successfully return to the regular classroom.
